Rules and Regulations of the Yoga Sports Championships

Please note, the following Rules and Regulations are applicable to the Malaysian Yoga Sports Association’s National Yoga Sports Championships and the Asian Yoga Federation’s Asian Yoga Sports Championships.

The Yoga Sports Championships will be organised in following events and age groups as per rules & regulations and syllabus of the Championship laid down by Asian Yoga Federation.

1. Yogasana Championship

Yogasanas consists of a presentation of asanas (postures) including forward bending, balancing, front and backward lying postures, sitting postures, etc., according to the relevant syllabus. It is a display of strength and steadiness in various postures.

  1. Competitor will perform 7 asanas out of 10 of their choice of their age groups.
  2. Competitor must be able to say the name of the asana loudly and clearly in Sanskrit before performing each asana.
  3. Competitor will maintain in each asanas for 15 seconds during the competition.

The Yogasanas Championship will be held in the following age groups.

(i) Sub-Junior Group A:  08-11 Years Boys & Girls

(ii) Sub-Junior Group B:  11-14 Years Boys & Girls

(iii) Junior Group:  14-17 Years Boys & Girls

(iv) Senior Group A:  17-21 Years Men & Women

(v) Senior Group B:  21-25 Years Men & Women

(vi) Senior Group C:  25-35 YearsMen & Women

(vii) Senior Group D:  Above 35 Years Men & Women

2. Artistic Yoga Championship

Artistic Yoga consists of presentation of various asanas (postures) including forward bending, balancing, front and backward lying postures, sitting postures, etc. performed in all four directions with music. It is synchronisation of body movement with music (without break).

  1. The number of postures performed is 8-10 of competitor’s choice.
  2. Synchronisation of body movements with music will be given top preference.
  3. The time duration for the presentation will be 120 to 150 seconds.
  4. The competitor will maintain each posture for at least 3-5 seconds during the performance.
  5. The transition from one posture to another posture should be slow & artistic

The Artistic Yoga Championship will be held in the following age groups.

(i) Junior: 8-17 Years Boys & Girls

(ii) Senior: Above 17 Years Men & Women

Note:

  • No Prop will be allowed during the performance of Artistic Yoga Competition.
  •  The performer can start with movement or can stay in posture. In any case time should start when the music start.
  • The time should stop when the movement stops.
  • If the performer stays in a posture at the very beginning that posture should be counted.

3. Artistic Pair Yoga Championship

Artistic Pair Yoga consists of presentation of various asanas (postures) including forward bending, balancing, front and backward lying postures, sitting postures etc. including pyramid making, performed in all four directions with music.

  1. The pair will consist of either both the girls or both the boys or a boy and a girl.
  2. Both the participants will perform two different postures at a time. Performing same posture or same nature of posture will be a disqualification.
  3. Postures should be supportive in nature.
  4. Body touch is allowed in the competition as per the discretion of the competitors.
  5. Making of pyramid will be given preference.
  6. Synchronisation of body movements with music will be given top preference.
  7. Number of postures performed should be 8-10 of competitor’s choice.
  8. Time duration for the presentation will be 120-150 seconds.
  9. The competitors will maintain each posture for at least 3-5 seconds during the performance.
  10. The transition from one posture to another posture should be slow, artistic and synchronised.

The Artistic Pair Yoga Championship will be held in the following age groups.

(i) Junior: 8-17 Years

(ii) Senior: Above 17 Years

Note:

  • No Prop will be allowed during the performance of Artistic Pair Yoga Competition.
  • The performer can start with movement or can stay in posture. In any case time should start when the music start.
  • The time should stop when the movement stops.
  • If the performer stays in a posture at the very beginning that posture should be counted.

4. Rhythmic Yoga Championship

Rhythmic Yoga is also known as Pair Yoga. The pair may consist of either both the boys or both the girls. Rhythmic Yoga is the presentation of various asanas (postures) including forward bending, backward bending, balancing front and backward lying postures etc. performed in all four directions with music. However, the following precautions are to be taken:

  1. The pair will consist of either both the girls or both the boys or a boy and a girl.
  2. The same posture should be performed by the pair together.
  3. Number of postures performed should be 8-10 of competitor’s choice.
  4. There should not be any body touch between the two participants.
  5. There should be perfect synchronisation of body movements with the music.
  6. Time duration for the presentation will be 120-150 seconds.
  7. The competitor will maintain each posture for at least 3-5 seconds during the performance.
  8. The transition from one posture to another should be slow, rhythmic and synchronised.

The Rhythmic Yoga Championship will be held in the following age groups.

(i) Junior: 8-17 Years

(ii) Senior: Above 17 Years

Note:

  • No Prop will be allowed during the performance of Rhythmic Yoga Competition.
  • The performer can start with movement or can stay in posture. In any case time should start when the music start.
  • The time should stop when the movement stops.
  • If the performer stays in a posture at the very beginning that posture should be counted.

5. Free Flow Yoga Dance Championship

Number of Entries: Only One team from one country can participate in the Asian Free Flow Yoga Dance Competition.

The Free Flow Yoga Dance Championship is the presentation of various Asanas (postures) including forward bending, backward bending, balancing, lying postures etc. performed in dancing movements with music, preferably with some theme.

  1. The team will consist of 5 players either all boys or all girls or boys and girls mixed
  2. The team can perform same postures/different postures/pyramids/free flow movements.
  3. There should be perfect synchronisation of body movements with the music.
  4. Number of postures performed should be 8-12 Combination of Asana of competitor’s choice.
  5. Time duration for the presentation will be 180-210 seconds (3 to 3½ Minutes).
  6. The competitors will maintain each posture for at least 3-5 seconds during the performance.
  7. The transition from one posture to another should be slow, rhythmic, synchronised and in dancing movement.

The Free Flow Yoga Dance Championship will be held in only one Open Age Group (mixture of all age groups).

  • No Prop will be allowed during the performance of Free Flow Yoga Dance Competition.
  • The performer can start with movement or can stay in posture. In any case time should start when the music start.
  • The time should stop when the movement stops.
  • If the performer stays in a posture at the very beginning that posture should be counted.

6. Open Category Yogasana Championship (For Selected National Championships Only)

Open Category Yogasanas allows you to choose your best 7 favourite poses and perform them as part of the competition. Competitor must be able to say the name of the asana loudly and clearly in Sanskrit before performing each asana. Competitor will perform 7 asanas of their own choice. Competitor will maintain in each asanas for 15 seconds during the competition.

(i) Sub-Junior Group A:  08-11 Years Boys & Girls

(ii) Sub-Junior Group B:  11-14 Years Boys & Girls

(iii) Junior Group:  14-17 Years Boys & Girls

(iv) Senior Group A:  17-21 Years Men & Women

(v) Senior Group B:  21-25 Years Men & Women

(vi) Senior Group C:  25-35 YearsMen & Women

(vii) Senior Group D:  35 -50Years Men & Women

(viii) Senior Group E:  Above 50 Years Men & Women

Additional Regulations & points to note:

  • The National Championships are open to Malaysian citizens only. Proof of citizenship will be required at registration.
  • The championship is open to all individuals in categories stated above in the rules and regulations. Participants below the age of 18 years old should submit a signed consent form from their parents or legal guardians or yoga teacher respectively.
  • No stimulation of drugs or alcohols or for that matter any intoxicative substances are allowed during the championship.
  • All participants must bring the original receipt of the bank slip as proof of payment during the registration on the day of the championship.
  • MYSA and MYFIA reserves the right to limit the number of participants due to time constraint on the championship day.
  • Information pertaining to the registration and arrival time for each category will be from 8am – 8.30am before the competition.
  • All participants are reminded to be in the championship hall before their age category commences. If the individual is not present / does not report to the stage Director by the 3rd announcement of the name and number, he/she will be disqualified.
  • Rules for attire:
    • Attire should be decent and presentable, can be one or two piece costume (no bikinis allowed).
    • Hair should be neatly secured so that the facial expression can be viewed clearly.
    • Clothing must be form fitting in order to best perceive movement, posture, and breathe work.
    • Each competitor must compete barefoot.
    • Any object that could potentially cause injury to competitor is prohibited, for example, wings pins, watches, socks, etc.
    • The competitor may wear glasses at his/her own risk.
  • Asana: Individual participants are limited to 10 asanas (postures), as laid out in the syllabus and set by the rules and regulations. Competitors will perform 7 out of 10 asanas of their choice, from their age group set by the rules and regulations. Please strictly follow the time set for performing each asana (at least 15 seconds) before proceeding to the next asana.
  • The flag will be raised if the competitor exceeds the time frame of 150 seconds. If not adhering to the time duration, the competitor will be disqualified.
  • Individuals shall be responsible for their own belongings and safety. All competitors are to maintain good conduct and proper discipline during the championship.
  • The JUDGES decisions are final, and all decisions rest with the President of the Malaysian Yoga Sports Association. There shall be no disputes after the top 3 places of each category.
  • MYSA and MYFIA reserves the right to disqualify any competitors who do not adhere to the rules and regulations and also reserves the right to add, alter and amend the rule and regulations and the programs without prior notice.
  • Any payment made is non-refundable and non-transferable.
  • Payment can be made by cheque or direct bank transfer.

Recognition:

Certificates, Championship Medals and other prizes will be awarded to the top 3 competitors of each category. A Certificate of Participation will be awarded to all. As it is fully endorsed and supported by MYSA, MYFIA, Asian Yoga Federation and International Yoga Sports Federation, the certificate of participation and merit is well recognised and can be used when applying for scholarships and the like.

National Championship:

Individual Adults (aged 18 years and over): RM35

Individual Children (aged 8-17 years): RM25

Pairs (any category, aged 18 years and over): RM45

Pairs (any category, aged 8-17): RM35

Asian Championship:

USD25 per competitor per entry.
